The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting Virasat 2025 – a SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) event, organised by the SPIC MACAY Heritage Club at IITGN, from March 22 – 30, 2025.
SPIC MACAY is a nationwide movement committed to preserving and promoting India’s rich cultural heritage among youth, by focussing on classical arts and their deeper values, while offering a glimpse into the age-old guru-shishya tradition. As part of this initiative, a series of enthralling concerts and workshops will be organised, offering a unique glimpse into Indian philosophies and knowledge traditions.
From March 22 – 26 2025, the institute will host a concert series featuring some of India’s most celebrated artists. It opens on March 22 with Vidushi A Kanyakumari, (Padma Shri) one of India’s foremost Carnatic violinists. On March 23, Dr Kaluram Bamniya, (Padma Shri) a noted folk singer from Madhya Pradesh, will present Kabir Gayan. On March 24, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, (Padma Shri) a master of the Gwalior, Jaipur, and Agra gharanas, will present Hindustani vocal music. Pandit Kashalkar will be accompanied by Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, (Padma Shri) an iconic tabla maestro and one of India’s foremost rhythm gurus, widely honoured for his contribution to classical music and pedagogy. The series continues on March 25 with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, a Padma Vibhushan awardee and globally acclaimed flautist. The final concert on March 26 will feature Vidushi Ashwini Bhide Deshpande (Padma Shri), who is an acclaimed Jaipur-Atrauli gharana vocalist, celebrated for her deep musicality and original compositions.
From March 27 – 30, 2025, Virasat 2025 at IITGN will feature a series of immersive workshops across diverse art forms. The workshops will run concurrently in the evenings over these four days. Participants can engage in (a) Hatha Yog workshop by Swami Tejomayananda Saraswati, a renowned yoga practitioner; (b) Manusha painting (traditional painting style) workshop by Shri Manoj Kumar Pandit, a leading Manusha painting revivalist; (c) Hindustani vocal music workshop by Shri Kumar Mardur, a noted Kirana Gharana vocalist; and (d) Mohiniyattam workshop under the guidance of Dr Ayswaria Wariar, a distinguished performer and scholar.
Under each of these workshops, students will get an opportunity to be trained in respective yog, art, classical dance, and vocal forms by esteemed empanelled gurus of SPIC MACAY. On the last day of the workshop, students will present their learnings. SPIC MACAY Heritage Club IIT Gandhinagar will help connect students to their roots.
