Indian Institute of Technology Madras is planning to conduct Webinars on topics of national relevance to mark 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. These webinars would be part of the ‘SIDDHI’ fortnightly webinar series as the ‘Health and Environment Week.’ This lecture series was launched on 14th August 2020 by the Institute.
The ‘SIDDHI’ (Self-reliant India: Discussions and Dialogues for Humane Innovations) webinar series will focus on the following themes:
- Socially relevant technologies
- Technology for self-reliance (‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’)
- Technology and rural development
As part of this series, several important topics have been lined up for discussion between October 1 and 4, 2020. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, will be inaugurating the series on October 1 2020.
Speaking about these upcoming discussions, Prof. Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean (Global Engagement), IIT Madras, said, “We are very happy to present discussions by eminent people addressing important problems in health and environment faced by our nation today. The engagement of participants from all sections of the society in this webinar series is encouraging and a testament to the relevance of the topics being discussed.”
The First Session is on the topic ‘Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in India: where are we and the way forward?’ has been scheduled for 6.30 pm on October 1 2020. The session would be moderated by Prof. V.R. Muraleedharan, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras, and feature eminent speakers including Dr. Girija Vaidyanathan IAS, former Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu.

The following session will be on ‘Designed for Independence: Enhancing Quality of Life for Persons with Disability’ is scheduled for 6.30 pm, October 2, 2020. The session would be moderated by Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan, Head, TTK Center for R2D2, IIT Madras, who developed ‘Arise,’ India’s first standing wheelchair. Speakers include Mr. V.R. Feroze, Senior Vice President, Head, of SAP Academy for Engineering, SAP SE, and Founder of India Inclusion Foundation.

The next day’s session is on ‘Wastewater Management in the 21st Century’ will be held at 7.30 pm on October 3, 2020. It would be addressed by Prof. George Tchobanoglous, Emeritus Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, and moderated by Prof. Indumathi M. Nambi, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras.

The final webinar of this week would be on ‘Sustainable water and waste management in villages’ and is scheduled for 6.30 pm, October 4, 2020. The Session would be addressed by Prof. Ligy Philip and Prof. BS Murty, Institute Chair Professors, IIT Madras.
