The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced that its Institute Open House 2026 will be held from 2nd to 4th January 2026, inviting the general public to explore the premier institute’s cutting-edge research ecosystem. The event opens up research labs, innovation hubs, and student-led project centres, offering visitors a rare, immersive experience inside IIT Madras.

Open to school and college students, teachers, researchers, industry professionals, and the general public, the Open House aims to spark scientific curiosity and broaden access to advanced STEM education. The previous edition saw overwhelming participation from students across Chennai and several rural districts.

80+ Exhibits and 100+ Labs to Be Showcased
The three-day event will feature:
- Around 80 exhibition stalls presenting faculty and student-led innovations
- Live demonstrations of emerging technologies
- Access to 100+ state-of-the-art laboratories, including major national and institutional research centres
- Centres of Excellence from various engineering and science disciplines
This year, the Open House is expected to be one of the institute’s largest public engagement campaigns, with around 95,000 registrants and nearly 60,000 visitors anticipated.
‘Anaivarukkum IITM’: Vision of Inclusive Access
Welcoming the public, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, emphasised that the initiative reflects the institute’s vision of “Anaivarukkum IITM – IIT Madras for All.”
He noted that the Open House aims to inspire students nationwide—particularly from rural and underrepresented regions—to pursue higher education and research careers at IIT Madras.
Strong Legacy of Participation
The 2025 edition of the Open House recorded nearly 35,000 visitors and participation from over 550 schools, enabled by massive volunteer support from the IIT Madras community.
The 2026 edition is organised under the ‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ initiative and in collaboration with Shaastra 2026, the institute’s annual technical festival.
