The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) have entered into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen academic collaboration and accelerate research-led learning for students of both institutions. The partnership seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary research, promote academic exchange, and expand opportunities for young scientists and engineers.
Welcoming the initiative, Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IITGN, said the collaboration carries special significance for him as an IISc alumnus. He emphasised that IITGN’s “student-first” philosophy is reflected in this alliance, which will broaden academic and research avenues for high-performing undergraduates. The agreement enables IITGN’s third-year BTech students to join IISc’s prestigious MTech and research programmes through a competitive process. Eligible students will graduate with a BTech from IITGN and an MTech from IISc.
Under the MoU, both institutions will co-organise workshops, symposia and joint research projects while allowing students and faculty to access cutting-edge laboratories and specialised infrastructure across both campuses. The collaboration aims to create a stronger academic bridge between the two premier institutions and enhance student exposure to Prof Rajat Moona advanced research environments.
Highlighting the broader vision, Prof G Rangarajan, Director, IISc, said the institute is eager to build similar partnerships with more IITs, allowing students to fast-track their academic progression in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. IISc currently offers more than two dozen MTech specialisations, with many programmes open to graduates from Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).
Described as a pioneering model, the IITGN–IISc collaboration is expected to serve as a template for future academic linkages across India’s leading institutions, combining strengths to nurture the next generation of researchers and innovators.
