NE EDUCATION BUREAU

AHMEDABAD, MAY 8

The Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management (IITRAM), Ahmedabad on Monday announced that one of its students has developed a low-cost machine to recycle plastics.

“In the current era of India’s concerted efforts to combat plastic pollution and foster a sustainable environment, Jinay Shah, a final year BTech. student at the Institute of Infrastructure, Technology, Research and Management (IITRAM) in Ahmedabad, has developed an innovative solution to address the escalating issue of plastic waste. Under the guidance of Dr Kumar Abhishek from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Jinay Shah has devised a groundbreaking approach,” says an IITRAM release.

Commenting on this, Dr Kumar Abhishek said, “Plastics have become an integral part of our lives, permeating every aspect of our daily routine. However, their disposal poses a significant challenge as most plastics often find their way into landfills. To promote plastic recycling and mitigate the environmental impact, Jinay Shah’s team has designed a portable injection molding machine capable of recycling plastic waste.”

“This machine has the potential to revolutionize the recycling industry and combat plastic pollution effectively. The cost-effective machine has been meticulously engineered to be portable and user-friendly. It possesses the ability to process mixed plastic waste and transform it into new, usable products. The operational principle involves melting down the plastic and shaping it according to requirements using a specially designed mold. This versatile machine can manufacture a diverse range of products, including toy components, gears, and more,” added Dr Abhishek.

This innovative machine is expected to incentivize individuals to recycle a larger proportion of their plastic waste, as it provides a practical solution that can be implemented on a small scale. Its compact and lightweight design, along with its cost-effectiveness, makes it suitable for installation in various locations such as schools, community centers, and residential societies. Furthermore, the machine can also cater to the needs of small-scale industries. The machine offers a practical and affordable solution to management of plastic waste that could have a significant impact on the environment.
