Gujarat is highly likely to experience an active monsoon spell over the next 3 days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD said on Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected in several parts of the state from June 30 to July 2.
Several parts of south Gujarat received heavy rainfall during the last 36 hours and more showers are expected in the next two days. Four children killed in wall collapse; five injured in Panchmahal district, officials said on Thursday.
Keeping in mind the possibility of very heavy rainfall, a red alert has been issued for the districts of Dangs, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra Nagar Haveli. An orange alert has been issued for Narmada, Surat, Amreli, Gir Somnath, and Diu.
Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Panchmahal, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Vadodara, Bharuch, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, and Saurashtra-Kutch districts, including Surendranagar, Bhavnagar, Botad, and Junagadh.
The downpour on Thursday threw life out of gear and affected the movement of traffic in Valsad, Surat, Navsari and Tapi districts of south Gujarat as heavy rains resulted in water-logging in low-lying areas as well as closure of some roads in rural parts, they said.
Following a quick spell of shower in the morning, several roads of Ahmedabad city were also inundated in knee-deep water and people had to wade through it to reach their destinations.
In the last 36 hours ending at 6 am on Thursday, Pardi taluka of Valsad district in south Gujarat received as much as 182 mm rainfall, a release by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said.
Pardi was followed by Valsad taluka of Valsad district (177 mm), Palsana taluka of Surat (171 mm), Valod taluka of Tapi (166 mm), Khergam of Navsari district (157 mm), Dharampur of Valsad (157 mm), Kamrej of Surat (152 mm) and Umargam of Valsad (143 mm).
Mandvi taluka of Surat, Kutiyana taluka of Porbandar and Keshod as well as Visavadar taluka of Junagadh district in Saurashtra region recorded more than 100 mm rainfall during this period.
In South Gujarat, Bardoli received 151 mm of rainfall, Mahuva recorded 139 mm, Walod experienced 137 mm and so on in Navsari, Gandiv and Jalalpore. The arrival of abundant rainwater in ponds and dams has brought joy to the farmers in the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its forecast issued during the day, predicted that “heavy to very heavy rainfall” would occur on Thursday at isolated places in south Gujarat region and at some places in north, central and Saurashtra region, including Sabarkantha, Vadodara, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Junagadh districts.
On Friday, “heavy to very heavy rainfall” would occur at isolated places across Gujarat, including Navsari, Valsad, Dahod, Sabarkantha, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Tapi, Bharuch and Junagadh district.
On Saturday, “heavy rainfall” is very likely at some places of south Gujarat region.
Meanwhile, four children under the age of five were killed and five others injured when a wall of a defunct factory collapsed on their makeshift tents amid heavy rains in an industrial area in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district on Thursday, said the police.
The victims’ families belong to Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh and have migrated here to work as labourers at a construction site near an unused chemical factory at Chandrapura village in Halol taluka, said the police.
Families of construction workers were living in makeshift tents that they had erected adjacent to the boundary wall of the factory, said District Superintendent of Police Himanshu Solanki.
“The wall suddenly collapsed on these families amid rain. Of the total nine persons injured in the wall collapse, four children under the age of five died on the spot,” he said.
Five others, including two women and two children, were shifted to a hospital in Halol. “Later, one of the injured was shifted to Vadodara for further treatment,” said Solanki.
The deceased kids have been identified as Chiriram Damor (5), Abhishek Bhuriya (4), Gungun Bhuriya (2) and Muskan Bhuriya (5).
