Ateam of Ganga Hospital on Monday performed an all-ceramic total knee replacement, without any metal components, on a 64-year-old woman. This was the first all-ceramic total knee replacement performed in India, announced S. Rajasekaran, chairman of Department of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Spine Surgery, here on Monday.
“For the first time in India, an all-ceramic Total Knee Replacement which is completely without any metal components and with the lowest wear and tear characteristics was performed for the first time in India in Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore today by Prof Dr S Rajasekaran and team comprising Professor Dr Michael Wagner, Germany,” a hospital release said.
- The BPK – S integration ceramic Knee system is the first all-ceramic Knee system in the world to offer a completely metal free treatment option
- This system is most tissue friendly, non-toxic, hypoallergenic and has lead to excellent results in a prospective study of patients with proven metal allergy
- The Arthroplasty unit of Ganga hospital is one of the most renowned joint placement centres in the country performing more than 3,000 joint placements every year
BPK – S integration ceramic Knee system
The metal free, all-ceramic Knee replacement is the end product of an interdisciplinary research group of orthopaedic surgeons, engineers, and material scientists who came together with the goal of developing an implant system, which will provide minimised particulate wear, sensible soft, tissue management and best tracking of the joint which all will lead to increased longevity of the prosthesis.
The goal of total knee replacement is to provide patients with a long lasting solution that will give them stable, pain-free, and near normal function for many decades, and if possible for their entire life. One of the main challenges has been the metal specific responses to metal wear (ions and nano particles) which can lead to adverse reactions and increased implant failure. All total replacements till now, have metal components and metal particles and can produce and can produce debris of cobalt, chromium and nickel which are reported to cause lymphocyte, dominated cell response, leading to inflammation and sometimes hyper sensitivity reaction. This can lead to local soft tissue reactions which sometimes can lead to pain and prolonged inflammation after the knee replacement.
The BPK – S integration ceramic Knee system is the first all ceramic Knee system in the world to offer a completely metal free treatment option. This hypoallergenic all-ceramic Knee system is most tissue friendly, non-toxic, hypoallergenic and has lead to excellent results in a prospective study of patients with proven metal allergy.
The clinical advantages are
- Immuno-allergological compatability: Safe in terms of metal iron release:
– Hypoallergenic
– High immunological tolerance
– No toxicity risk
– Tissue-friendly
- Significantly reduced polyethylene water
- Less biofilm formation on ceramic surfaces
- Excellent visualisation due to significantly fewer CT and MRT artefacts
Arthroplasty unit
The Arthroplasty unit of Ganga hospital is one of the most renowned joint placement centres in the country performing more than 3,000 joint placements every year. The unit was the 1st to have the fourth-generation image Robotic system- VELYS, for precise and accurate total Knee replacements in the country.
