AHMEDABAD, DECEMBER 1
A day after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took on his Gujarat counterpart Vijay Rupani on the ban of the sale of liquor in the state, saying that this remains only on paper, Rajkot police seized illicit liquor worth over Rs 5 lakh on Sunday. However, the bootlegger gave the slip to the police,
Incidentally, the bootlegger was reportedly running his business in a school set up by Mahatma Gandhi in Rajkot, which is the home town of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who is also an MLA from the same area.
A stock of liquor worth Rs 5.18 lakh was seized from the school in Rajkot on Sunday morning.
Acting on the information, the Rajkot Police reached the spot and recovered 473 bottles of liquor, 260 small liquor bottles and 16 beer carats worth Rs 5, 18,975. Before the police could reach the school, the bootlegger had fled from the spot.
As of now, the police are investigating the case to nab the accused.
Jitu Bhatt, the trustee of the school said that this has nothing to do with the school. “The liquor has been recovered from the person who used to work in the school for some time,” he said.
Mahatma Gandhi had laid the foundation of the school from where the liquor bottles were seized. It was started to promote education.
The school is located near the Rajkot Alfred High School where Gandhi had pursued his primary education.
Although there is a strict prohibition on the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol, illegal liquor worth millions, crores and rupees are seized from different parts of Gujarat every day.
This has also raised questions on the law and order situation in the state of Gujarat.
“Gujarat being home of Mahatma Gandhi has prohibited the sale of liquor, but this is only on papers,” Ashok Gehlot had said.
