NEW DELHI, FEB 24

Lok Sabha elections are due to be held in April-May this year, however, the polling schedule is yet to be announced. Congress and AAP have agreed to contest election together in Delhi, Gujarat, and Haryana. However, in Punjab, the parties will be contesting polls independently. As per the arrangement, Congress will be contesting from Chandigarh, not AAP.

AAP and Congress are part of the opposition’s I.N.D.I.A bloc, formed to take on the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to presspersons, Congress general secretary Mukul Wasnik said in Delhi, Congress will be contesting in three seats and AAP in four. “In 26 seats in Gujarat, Congress will contest in 24 and AAP on two – in Bharuch and Bhavnagar. In 10 seats in Haryana, Congress will contest in nine seats and AAP in one, at Kurukshetra,” Wasnik said. He added that Congress will contest in the lone Chandigarh seat and in both seats in Goa.

AAP leader Sandeep Pathak said, “Today, the situation that the country is going through, the manner in which the BJP Government is finishing all institutions one by one, the elections are being ‘stolen’ and Opposition leaders are being put in jail to win elections, the manner in which injustice is being done with farmers, the manner in which people of the country are suffering through unemployment and inflation, the country needs an honest and strong alternate.”

Pathak said, ”Casting aside our own political interests and keeping in mind the interest of the nation, we came together in this alliance. It is the country which is important, party is always secondary. This election will not be fought in the manner that Congress will contest from here and AAP will contest from there, INDIA will contest this election.”

Speaking on the seat-sharing pact, Delhi Congress president Arvind Singh Lovely said, “The AAP and Congress are part of the I.N.D.I.A bloc. We had said this earlier that the alliance will contest against the BJP across the nation. This is a battle for the entire country and the results would be definitely favourable for the I.N.D.I.A bloc.”

Maharashtra Assembly LoP and Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar said, “Several efforts were made to ensure that the alliance between Congress and AAP doesn’t  materialise. CBI and ED were also used. Despite that, the Congress and AAP have agreed to contest the elections together. This is going to give a positive message across the country.”

Congress has already announced seat-sharing with Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh. The ‘Grand Old Party’ will contest on 17 seats in UP while the remaining 63 will be contested by SP and other alliance partners.
