NE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY BUREAU
NEW DELHI, FEB 18

In a bold move set to catapult India into the next frontier of intelligent space exploration, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has announced a transformative funding programme—AI INSPIRED Opportunities in Space Sector—with a total outlay of up to ₹6 crore to accelerate Artificial Intelligence integration across the nation’s rapidly expanding private space ecosystem.

The landmark announcement was made by Dr. Vinod Kumar, Director, Promotion Directorate, IN-SPACe, at the high-profile India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi during the session titled “Beyond Earth: How AI is Powering the Next Era of Space Exploration,” where IN-SPACe also served as the knowledge partner.

Launched under the IN-SPACe Seed Fund Scheme, the initiative will provide grant-in-aid support of up to ₹1 crore each to selected startups and Micro and Small Industries developing breakthrough AI-powered solutions for space exploration, satellite systems, and downstream applications.

Emphasising the transformative synergy between two powerful domains, Dr. Vinod Kumar said, “Both space and artificial intelligence are burgeoning sectors, and their convergence holds strong potential to transform how we explore and operate in complex and remote environments through autonomous and intelligent decision making. We will support selected entities with proposal development, access to resources, mentorship, skills, and solution building support. We are keen to see how non-government entities use this opportunity to develop solutions that serve national priorities over the long term.”

The AI INSPIRED programme—an acronym for INnovating Space Performance with Intelligent Resilient Engines Development—is strategically designed to integrate AI into critical areas of space activity. These include intelligent onboard systems, AI-enabled analysis of space-derived data for Earth-based applications, and advanced technologies that enhance operational efficiency, reliability, and accessibility in space missions.

Up to six high-potential grantees will be selected through a competitive process, each eligible to receive grant support of up to ₹1 crore. The initiative focuses on three strategic tracks:

  • Edge Intelligence in Orbit – enabling autonomous satellite decision-making and in-orbit optimization
  • Space for Earth Intelligence – leveraging AI to unlock insights from satellite data for terrestrial applications
  • Smart Access to Space – advancing intelligent technologies that enhance mission efficiency and accessibility

The programme represents a major milestone in India’s ambition to foster private sector participation in space innovation and position itself as a global leader in AI-enabled space technologies.

Applications are now open to eligible space startups and Micro and Small Industries through the official IN-SPACe portal, with the final submission deadline set for March 20, 2026.

By empowering innovators with funding, mentorship, and institutional support, IN-SPACe is laying the foundation for a new era where Artificial Intelligence and space technology converge to unlock unprecedented possibilities—from smarter satellites to intelligent Earth monitoring systems—propelling India toward technological sovereignty in the space age.
