In a major step toward reshaping India’s military architecture for the coming decades, Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister of India, on Tuesday released Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military at an event held in South Block.

The comprehensive blueprint, prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, aims to transform the Indian Armed Forces into a modern, integrated and technologically advanced military, capable of safeguarding national interests and supporting India’s ambition of emerging as a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

The vision document outlines a broad spectrum of strategic reforms, capability enhancements and organisational restructuring required to address the evolving geostrategic, technological and security environment.
Blueprint for Multi-Domain Warfare
The roadmap envisages transforming India’s military into an integrated, multi-domain and agile force, capable of deterring adversaries and responding across the entire spectrum of conflict.
It highlights the need for forces that can operate seamlessly across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains, ensuring robust defence preparedness amid rapidly changing global and regional dynamics.
A central pillar of the document is the emphasis on jointness and synergy among the services, strengthening coordination in planning, operations and capability development.
Technology and Innovation at the Core
The vision strongly underlines the role of innovation, advanced technologies and modern training frameworks in preparing the armed forces for future warfare challenges.
Another key focus area is Aatmanirbharta in defence, encouraging the development and adoption of indigenous technologies and home-grown solutions tailored to India’s unique security requirements.
By strengthening domestic defence manufacturing and technological capabilities, the initiative aims to enhance operational readiness while contributing to national economic growth.
Structured Roadmap for Capability Development
The document proposes a calibrated roadmap with short-term, medium-term and long-term capability goals, ensuring systematic development of military power and institutional reforms.
This structured strategy will guide the development of critical capabilities, strategic partnerships and institutional transformations necessary to build a world-class defence force.
Recognising the complexity of modern security challenges, the vision also advocates a whole-of-nation approach, integrating military strength with diplomatic, technological and economic power to safeguard national security.
Through sustained reforms, innovation and national commitment, the blueprint seeks to ensure that by the centenary of India’s independence in 2047, the country’s armed forces will stand as a globally respected, technologically advanced and combat-ready military, contributing to a strong and resilient Viksit Bharat.

The event was attended by Anil Chauhan, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Rajesh Kumar Singh, and Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, along with other senior defence officials.
