The Indian Army successfully inaugurated the much-anticipated Multilateral Annual Joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise ‘Sanyukt Vimochan 2024’ in Ahmedabad on Monday. The inaugural event marked the beginning of a comprehensive exercise aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness and response capabilities among various agencies.
The event featured a Table Top Exercise, focusing on the theme of a ‘Cyclone in Coastal Region of Gujarat’, simulating a disaster scenario impacting the Okha-Porbandar coastline. This exercise aimed to address gaps in interagency integration and cooperation, ensuring a swift and coordinated response to natural disasters.
Representatives from nine friendly foreign countries, alongside the Indian Armed Forces, Indian Coast Guard, National Disaster Management Authority and multiple Central and State agencies, will participate in this event aimed at enhancing disaster management capabilities. The level of participation reflects the importance of this international collaborative event in disaster management.
The 2024 edition will see participation from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, UAE, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Maldives, and Malaysia, furthering international cooperation in disaster management.
Representatives from approximately 100 countries, including Gulf Cooperation Council and Indian Ocean Region nations, will observe the exercise, fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration.
The Indian Army announced the details of the exercise through the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) on social media platform X. “The exercise will unite varied forces to tackle natural disasters, assess efficiency in response measures, and optimise disaster management frameworks,” the post read.
‘Sanyukt Vimochan 2024’ will also have a Capability Demonstration and Industrial Display event which will be conducted at Porbandar on Tuesday. This event will showcase practical implementation of relief operations in Coastal areas employing multiple agencies and specialized equipment for the purpose.
The exercise aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to promote disaster resilience globally. Initiatives such as the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, underscore India’s commitment to building robust infrastructure capable of withstanding climate and disaster risks.
CDRI’s multilateral approach involves partnerships with national governments, UN agencies, multilateral development banks, and private stakeholders. This initiative resonates with India’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on creating resilient systems that ensure prosperity and sustainability.
Exercise Sanyukt Vimochan 2024 is a testament to India’s proactive stance in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters. By integrating cutting-edge technology, fostering international cooperation, and leveraging indigenous capabilities, the Indian Army is setting a benchmark in disaster management and resilience.
