In order to sensitise fishermen folk of Gujarat on safety and security at sea during the upcoming monsoon season, the Indian Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (North West), located at Gandhinagar, conducted Special Community Interaction Programmes (CIP) through its units in Gujarat.

“The two Coast Guard District Headquarters in the region i.e., CGDHQ-1 and CGDHQ-15 conducted 23 in number CIPs from end of April to 10 May 2023 at places like Tragadi, Bedi, Beyt Balapur, Ghogha, Jakhau, Miyani, Nani Bander, Porbander and other fishing hamlets across the Gujarat Coast. Other relevant stakeholders viz Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Department of Forest, Fisheries, Marine Police and Local Fishing Associations were also included towards this effort,” says a release.

The main focus of the event was to educate the fishermen about importance of carrying lifesaving gears or requisite documents while venturing into sea and were conducted in Gujarati and Hindi languages. Fishing community were also informed regarding Search and Rescue (SAR) Help Line Toll Free Number 1554 for seeking SAR assistance at sea, Carriage of Distress Alert Transmitter (DATs) for seeking ICG assistance and how to use IMD website on smartphones, the statement added.
Practical demonstrations were given about correct wearing of Life Jackets and correct usage of Lifebuoys, CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and on dealing with adverse weather conditions.
