The Indian Coast Guard, the Central Coordinating Agency (CCA) for combating oil spill in Indian water, on Friday announced that it had conducted a two-day pollution response seminar and mock drill on February 23 and 24.
. In accordance with the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP), the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 1, Porbandar conducted the District level Pollution Response Seminar/Workshop and mock drill on Wednesday and Thursday, February 23 – 24 at Porbandar.
The seminar/workshop and the mock drill was conducted to revalidate the response mechanism for oil pollution incidents and enable the Indian Coast Guard to fine tune the Regional and National Oil Spill Disaster contingency Plan, the statement added.
The workshop was inaugurated by DIG SK Verghese, Commander District Headquarters No. 1 (Gujarat) Porbandar. The event was attended by representatives from GMB, Bhavnagar Port, minor ports in area, officials from petrochemical industries and other stakeholders. The workshop was conducted in two phases, including table top exercise simulating oil spill and practical demonstration of oil spill equipment onboard ICGS Samudra Pavak which is a specialized pollution control vessel of the Indian Coast Guard.
Such events are conducted by the Indian Coast Guard to ensure interoperability amongst various stake holder of marine pollution response and ascertain preparedness in case of oil spill contingency.
