Indian-origin publishing legend Sonny Mehta passes away in NY

NEW YORK, JAN 1

Sonny Mehta, Indian-origin publishing legend, died at his residence in Manhattan, New York on Tuesday. Mehta, 77, was the editor-in-chief of the publishing house Alfred A Knopf and chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group in New York.

He was the winner of lifetime achiever awards for publishing in India, the US and Britain. He was also named Person of the Year by Publishers Weekly.

Mehta was married to Gita Mehta, the sister of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. In a tweet Naveen Patnaik said “I am  deeply grieved by the passing away of my brother in law Sonny Mehta (Husband of my sister Gita Mehta). He was one of the world’s best editors and an extremely civilized person. May his soul rest in peace”.
