Record freight loading marks a new milestone
Indian Railways has registered its highest-ever freight loading for October, transporting 145.07 million tonnes of goods during the month, against 133.93 million tonnes in October 2025, translating into a robust growth of 8.32%.
The impressive performance reflects the national transporter’s sustained focus on operational efficiency, enhanced freight capacity and strengthening its role as a cost-effective backbone of India’s logistics ecosystem.
Several key commodity segments recorded encouraging growth during October 2026, highlighting the broad-based momentum across freight transportation.
Food grains loading surged by 26.3%, followed by domestic coal at 16%, Balance Other Goods at 11%, clinker at 10.4%, domestic containers at 6.3%, iron ore at 5%, mineral oil at 1.9% and finished steel at 0.5%.
The growth in food-grain transportation is particularly significant, underscoring the importance of rail connectivity in facilitating the movement of essential commodities and supporting the country’s supply-chain requirements.
Coal supplies to power houses get a major boost
In a significant push to meet the increased fuel requirements of power houses, Indian Railways substantially stepped up domestic coal transportation during October.
The national transporter supplied an average of 469.8 rakes per day during October 2026, compared with 393.2 rakes per day in October 2025, registering a notable growth of 19.5%.
The enhanced movement of domestic coal reflects the railways’ critical contribution to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supplies to power-generating stations and supporting the country’s energy requirements.
Seven-month freight performance sustains upward trajectory
The October milestone builds on the positive momentum achieved during the first seven months of FY 2026-27.
Between April and October 2026, Indian Railways transported 978.78 million tonnes of freight, compared with 935.10 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
This represents a year-on-year growth of 4.67%, reinforcing the resilience of the railway freight network and its growing contribution to the country’s industrial, agricultural and commercial supply chains.
The sustained increase in freight movement also highlights the importance of capacity augmentation, improved terminal operations and efficient utilisation of railway infrastructure in meeting the evolving logistics needs of the economy.
Passenger mobility also gathers momentum
Alongside its strong freight performance, Indian Railways continued to register growth in passenger transportation during October 2026.
The national transporter carried 64.72 crore passengers during the month, compared with 63.52 crore in October 2025, reflecting continued demand for rail-based mobility.
The cumulative passenger traffic during April–October 2026 also recorded encouraging growth, reaching 443.8 crore passengers against 431.4 crore during the corresponding period last year.
Within the passenger segment, Non-Suburban traffic registered growth of 4.2%, while the Suburban segment recorded an increase of 1.7%.
The growth across both segments underscores the continuing importance of India’s railway network in facilitating everyday mobility, connecting communities and meeting the transportation needs of millions of passengers.
Railways strengthening India’s economic connectivity
The combined growth in freight and passenger transportation reflects Indian Railways’ continuing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, expand capacity and strengthen the country’s transportation infrastructure.
With essential commodities, industrial raw materials, agricultural produce and passengers moving across its extensive network, Indian Railways remains a critical enabler of economic activity and national connectivity.
The latest October performance further highlights the strategic importance of rail-based logistics in supporting India’s growth ambitions while improving the efficiency and reach of its transportation ecosystem.
As freight trains carry the momentum of economic activity across the country and passenger services connect millions of lives every day, Indian Railways is steadily strengthening its position as a vital engine of India’s growth story.
