Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a deeply reflective and inspirational letter issued on the occasion of Constitution Day, said that 26 November stands as “a day of immense pride” for every Indian — a day when the Constitution became the nation’s moral compass and transformative force. Recalling the historic adoption of the Constitution in 1949, he said the document continues to illuminate India’s democratic journey with “clarity, conviction and courage.”

Modi noted that the NDA government in 2015 declared November 26 as Constitution Day to ensure national awareness and collective gratitude toward the founding charter.

‘Constitution Empowered Me and Millions Like Me’
In an emotional recollection, the Prime Minister said it was the Constitution’s strength and inclusive vision that enabled a man from a humble and economically disadvantaged family to rise to the highest office in the country and serve continuously for 24 years.
He recounted bowing at the Parliament steps in 2014, calling the building the “greatest temple of democracy,” and again in 2019, when he placed the Constitution on his forehead in reverence. “This Constitution has given millions the power to dream and the courage to fulfil those dreams,” he wrote.
Honouring Framers, Women Members and National Icons
PM Modi paid glowing tributes to the architects of the Constitution — Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the distinguished women members of the Constituent Assembly — for their visionary contributions.
He recalled the ‘Samvidhan Gaurav Yatra’ held in Gujarat in 2010 when the Constitution completed 60 years, expressing regret that the occasion did not receive due national attention at the time. At 75 years, he said, India celebrated with record public participation through the special session of Parliament and nationwide programmes.
Milestone Anniversaries: Patel, Birsa Munda, Vande Mataram & Guru Teg Bahadur
Calling this year’s Constitution Day “extraordinary,” Modi highlighted landmark anniversaries:
- 150th birth anniversaries of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Bhagwan Birsa Munda, whose legacies shaped unity, justice and empowerment.
- 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, a timeless symbol of national resolve.
- 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, whose sacrifice embodies courage and compassion.
He said Sardar Patel’s vision strengthened the political unification of India and inspired the steps that led to the abrogation of Article 370 and 35(A), ensuring full constitutional rights to the people of Jammu & Kashmir, especially women and marginalised communities. Birsa Munda’s life, he added, continues to inspire justice and dignity for tribal communities.
‘Duties Are the Foundation of a Strong Nation’
Modi emphasised the Constitution’s chapter on Fundamental Duties in Article 51A, echoing Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that well-performed duties naturally generate real rights. “Every action of ours should strengthen the Constitution and advance national goals,” he stressed.
He reminded that 25 years of the century are already behind us, and by 2047–49, India will celebrate 100 years of freedom and a century since adopting the Constitution. Decisions taken today, he said, will shape generations ahead.
Calling Youth to Lead India’s Democratic Journey
The Prime Minister urged citizens to never miss voting in any election. He proposed that schools and colleges hold special ceremonies every 26 November to honour young Indians turning 18, inspiring them to become active participants in nation-building.
“When youth embrace their duties with pride, they remain lifelong guardians of democracy,” he wrote.
‘Let Us Strengthen the Constitution, Build a Viksit Bharat’
Modi concluded with a call to renew the national pledge:
“Let us reaffirm our duties as citizens of this great nation. In doing so, we can meaningfully contribute to building a Viksit Bharat — a developed and empowered India.”
