Ruling AIADMK has bagged the post of district panchayat chairperson in 13 districts – Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Karur, Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal, Tiruppur, Pudukottai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari. Its ally, the PMK has secured the post in Salem district.
DMK has won the post in 12 districts – Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Nilgiris, Perambalur, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Dindigul and Ramanathapuram, says a release from Tamil Nadu State Election Commission.
Out of the total number of 27 District Panchayat Chairmen and Vice Chairmen posts, indirect election was held in 26 districts and election was not held in Sivagangai due to the absence of necessary quorum.
Similarly, the ruling AIADMK won Vice Chairmen posts in 7 districts, DMK in 11 districts, PMK 3, BJP 2, Indian National Congress 2 and DMDK one post.
In the indirect election held for 287 Panchayat Union Chairmen posts, the ruling AIADMK won 140 unions, DMK in 125 unions, PMK 7, Congress 5, BJP 3, CPI 3 and AMMK 2 and Independents won in 2 places. Indirect election for Chairmen post was not held for different reasons in 27 panchayat unions.
Similarly, indirect elections for 41 posts of Vice Chairmen for Panchayat Unions were not held for want of required quorum. Elections were held for 273 posts. Of these, AIADMK bagged 94 unions, DMK won in 107 unions, PMK in 19 unions, Congress 8, DMDK in 7, AMMK in 5, BJP 4, CPI 3, SDPI 1 and independents won in 25 unions, the release from SEC said.
