NE NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, DEC 11
In a first-of-its-kind intervention in Tamil Nadu’s public service ecosystem, Isha Foundation has launched a free cremation service for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families across all crematoriums it manages in the state. The initiative was inaugurated in Chennai by Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, who praised Isha for its sustained contribution, noting that the Foundation has already facilitated over one lakh dignified cremations across its facilities.
- A landmark social intervention bringing dignity to the deceased and relief to the poor
- 17 crematoriums now offer no-cost final rites; ancient rituals restored with sensitivity and care
- Model aims to expand across India, Transforming End-of-Life Services for Millions
The new initiative completely removes the financial burden associated with final rites for the poor. With this launch, 17 Isha-managed gas crematoriums—run jointly with the Tamil Nadu government—will now offer cremation services at zero cost for BPL families, with three more facilities expected to be added soon.
Reviving Rituals, Restoring Dignity
For over 15 years, guided by Sadhguru, Isha Foundation has been managing crematoriums across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu—Chennai, Vellore, Thanjavur and Coimbatore—reviving ancient rituals and conducting them with “a powerful energy basis” and deep sensitivity.
The Foundation emphasises that its cremation services are not commercial ventures, but an act of seva rooted in compassion. Rituals are conducted with care to ease the grief of families, and every staff member undergoes specialised training to ensure the highest standards of respect in handling the departed.
A dedicated mandapam is provided at each crematorium for families to perform traditional rites without disturbance.
Clean, Green, and Compliant Facilities
Every Isha-managed crematorium adheres strictly to:
- Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board norms
- Government guidelines for gas-electric crematoriums
Isha also takes responsibility for transforming the premises into clean, green, and serene environments, including:
- Park-like landscaped spaces
- Dense tree cover
- Safe walking pathways
- Hygienic bathing and toilet facilities
These enhancements, carried out with government support, ensure families can perform final rites in surroundings that uphold sanctity, cleanliness, and emotional comfort.
A National Model in the Making
The initiative marks the beginning of a far-reaching vision. In line with Sadhguru’s guidance, Isha Foundation plans to adopt between 1,000 and 3,000 crematoria across India, aiming to transform end-of-life services nationwide by restoring traditional sanctity and ensuring dignified, compassionate practices accessible to all—especially the poorest.
With Tamil Nadu’s free cremation service now operational statewide, Isha Foundation has set a new benchmark in social responsibility, offering not just a service, but a profound message: every life, regardless of economic status, deserves dignity—both in living and in departure.
