With an aim to enhance the standards of town planning in the country, the Gujarat regional chapter of The Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI) inaugurated its research centre in Ahmedabad on Saturday. ITPI is the apex national body in the field of town planning since 1951 and has more than 8,000 members.
A meeting of the council members of ITPI, comprising senior town planners, chief town planners and directors of town planning departments of various states was held at Ahmedabad on Friday.
ITPI President Dr DS Meshram inaugurated the research centre in the presence of a large number of town planners from across the state and country.
In his address, Dr Meshram stressed the important role of town and country planners since urbanisation is intrinsic to development and serves as a major driver of economic growth. He said that around 8,000 planners across the country are registered with ITPI. There are 70 educational institutions offering degree programmes in urban planning and allied specialisations and nomenclatures like environmental planning, transportation planning, housing, infrastructure planning, etc.
NK Patel, council member of ITPI and immediate past president said the research centre will enhance the knowledge and learning of young town planners. It will also help in promoting the town planning of state and country. ITPI, GRC has an excellent infrastructure which can be used for hosting workshops and training sessions, he said.
In his address, ITPI general secretary Pradeep Kapoor shared details about the new initiatives of ITPI in the last couple of years. He said the central government is also focusing on urban planning and development and has launched various missions to boost planned development.
Important policy issues for the promotion and development of the town planning profession and fraternity were discussed at the meeting.

Dr S T Puttaraju, retired chief town planner of Goa emphasised how non-developable land like marshy, agriculture, canal, etc. can be utilised through the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) mechanism in development plan.
Dr. Uma Adusumilli, former chief planner, MMRDA, Mumbai highlighted the challenges during the regional planning of the Mumbai metropolitan region.
Dr Saswat Bandyopadhyay of CEPT focused on land pooling tool (town planning schemes) in the state and the requirement of paradigm shift in terms of improvement and allotment of green cover in planning practices.
More than 250 planners from Gujarat and other states participated in the seminar. Shyanil Patel, Chairman of Gujarat Regional Chapter of ITPI, and Rajesh Rawal, council member and past chairman of GRC were instrumental in the success of the event.
