By-elections to Gujarat’s Visavadar and Kadi assembly seats and one seat each in Kerala, Punjab and West Bengal will be held on June 19 and the results will be announced four days later, May 23. The Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Sunday.
- A gazette notification for the by-elections will be issued on Monday
- The scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 3
- The candidates can withdraw their names until June 5.
In Gujarat, the bypoll to the Kadi seat was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki.
Another bypoll to the Visavadar seat in the state is taking place due to the resignation of sitting member Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai.
In Kerala, the Nilambur seat will go to bypoll since P V Anvar has resigned, while byposs are to be held in Punjab’s Ludhiana seat due to the death of sitting member Gurpreet Bassi Gogi.
Byelection to the Kaliganj Assembly seat in West Bengal has been necessitated due to the death of sitting assembly member Nasiruddin Ahamed.
With this, the stage for a three-way contest among the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) scheduled in Gujarat.
The Congress on Sunday named Geniben Thakor, its sole Lok Sabha member from Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani, Kirit Patel, and Raghu Desai as in-charges for the Kadi by-poll. Paresh Dhanani, Punjabhai Vansh, Indranil Rajyaguru, and Vasram Sagathiya will be in charge of the Visavadar seat.
The AAP has named former state chief Gopal Italia as its candidate from Visavadar, banking on his advocacy for farmers and anti-corruption activism to regain the seat it won in the 2022 assembly polls.

MODEL CODE OF CONDUCT
The Model Code of Conduct shall come into force with immediate effect in the district(s) in which the whole or any part of the Assembly constituency going for election is included, subject to provision of the instruction vide Commission’s letter No. 437/6/1NST/ECI/FUNCT/MCC/2024/(BYE ELECTIONS) dated 02nd January, 2024 (available on the Commission’s website).
