After the successful venture of ‘Ayali’, the ZEE5 has produced a political drama ‘Sengalam’, hit the OTT platform on Friday received overwhelming response from the audience, especially for the last three episodes.
Director S R Prabhakaran has chosen a small picturesque town as backdrop for his OTT debut ‘Sengalam’, an intense political drama.
- The series has ample opportunities to conceive a riveting political drama packed with action episodes and intriguing twists
- The complex character of a political kingmaker, who is torn between his children’s aspirations, is safe in his hands reminds the audience of a Dravidian leader who lived in the hearts of the people through his social welfare schemes.
- The story and screen play was written based on his personal experience, says director
The story revolves around Rayar (Kalaiyarasan), elder sibling of two brothers and sister Nachiyar (Shali) who has the dream of politics in her belly taking revenge for killing his mother. A stern police officer (Arjai) is after siblings to nab them before they commit their third political murder.
Trailer:
Meanwhile, Sivagnanam (Sharath Lohitashwa), head of a politically influential family in a town in Southern Tamil Nadu was confused over choosing a next candidate for the post of municipal chairman after his elder son was killed in an accident. When he is expected to select one among his family members, his daughter- in-law Suryakala (Vani Bhojan) returned to his father-in-law’s house and expressed her desire through his childhood friend Nachiyar (Shali) sarcastically.
The two plots converge at a crucial point and a series of unexpected incidents sums up Sengalam’s story. The series has ample opportunities to conceive a riveting political drama packed with action episodes and intriguing twists. The major positive aspect of the web series is the flawless performances of artists.
Sharath Lohitashwa stands out with the portrayal of an ageing, but determined family head who is aware of the responsibility he shoulders. The complex character of a political kingmaker, who is torn between his children’s aspirations, is safe in his hands reminds the audience of a Dravidian leader who lived in the hearts of the people through his social welfare schemes.
Kalaiyarasan and Vani Bhojan enjoy a lion’s share of the screen space and they have done justice to their respective characters. Vela Ramamoorthy, Prem and Muthukumar among others register their presence with their honest depictions. Shali played the role of Nachiyar strongly reminiscent the role of ‘Udan Pirava Sagotharigal (Late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her close aide V K Sasikala’.) How Shali plotted to become the party leader reminds us how the money played pivotal role in criminalization of politics.
Story:
Three brothers, who are on killing spree, are awaiting the perfect time to take revenge on their third target. A cop has been assigned to nab the trio and he’s hell-bent on capturing them alive. Meanwhile, a political kingmaker, who is reeling under the untimely demise of his son, is confused about choosing the right candidate for the post of municipal chairman in his town. All of them are linked to each other through a series of incidents that involve deceit, aspirations, loyalty and murders.
In a post press show press conference on Thursday, the director S R Prabhakaran said that the story and screen play was written based on his personal experience.
