As the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War nears, a poignant journey unfolds in the heart of India. Three teams of 24 motorcycle riders, belonging to Indian Army & the Regiment of Artillery, have set off on an emotional expedition to retrace the paths of the 1999 conflict between India and Pakistan on Wednesday.
The Regiment of Artillery played a pivotal role in the success of Operation Vijay, and this expedition serves to highlight their significant contributions and honour the legacy of our brave soldiers.
“On 12th of June, 2024, three teams of eight motorcycles each had embarked on this historic journey from the corners of the country – Dinjan in Assam, Dwarka in Gujarat and Dhanushkodi in Tamilnadu. These dedicated riders are traversing diverse terrains, weather and challenging routes, symbolizing the unity and resilience of our armed forces. The three teams will converge concurrently in Delhi to ride to Dras, via two separate northern arteries, Srinagar & Manali. The ride will finally reach its destination at Gun Hill in Dras, a place etched in history by sheer valour of gunners during the Kargil War,” says a Defence release.
The Western segment was Flagged Off by Lt Gen (Retd) Mahipat Sinhji, PVSM & Brig Yogendra Chaudhary, Commander 11 Artilery Brigade at sunset Point from the historic city of Dwarka. Devbhumi Dwarka believed to be the first capital of Gujarat, renowned for its ancient temples and spiritual significance, served as a fitting starting point for this remarkable journey. As the motorcycles roared to life, a jubilant crowd, including Kargil war veterans & Ex-Servicemen, cheered them on, adding to the patriotic fervor.
The expedition will traverse towards Dhrangadhra, spreading a message of national pride and resilience across the route. Flag-In and Flag-Off ceremonies at all staging locations is being marked by the presence of senior officials and distinguished guests who will honour the riders and the cause they represent.
Eastern Route encompasses movement from Dinjan to Delhi, via Jorhat, Guwahati, Binaguri, Katihar, Danapur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Agra covering 2,489 Kms approximately.
Western Route encompasses movement from Dwarka to Delhi via Dhrangadhra, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Jaipur and Alwar covering 1,565 Kms approximately.
Southern Route encompasses movement from Dhanuskodi to Delhi via Madurai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Anantapur, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhopal Gwalior and Alwar covering 2,963 Kms approximately.
In addition to the motorcycle journey, the expedition featured the felicitation of Kargil Veer Matas/ Naris (war widows) and War Veterans, recognizing their sacrifices and unwavering support. Senior Indian Army Veterans were also honoured, acknowledging their contributions also ensuring that their legacy is passed on to future generations.
The Delta 5 Motorcycle Expedition aims to showcase the crucial role played by the gunners during the Kargil War. The artillery’s precision, firepower, and strategic support were instrumental in turning the tide in favor of the Indian forces. This expedition not only commemorates a historical victory but also educates the public about the significant contributions of the Regiment of Artillery. As the riders ride through the length and breadth of the country, they are carrying with them the saga of courage, sacrifice and patriotism. Their ride is not just a tribute but a symbol of enduring spirit of the Indian Army & will invigorate the spirit of patriotism among the youths.

Immersed with patriotic fervour, 50 students from multiple education institutes, NCC cadets, local populace, civil administration joined the riding team, as a mark of reverence & solemn tribute to the battle heroes.
