With a view to completely seal the Indo-Pakistan borders to stop infiltration and illegal migration, the Indian government has so far finished the newly-designed smart fencing along 90.610 kms stretch, according to officials.
The Indo-Pak border in Kutch area of Gujarat will soon get smart fencing for 13 km. A proposal in this regard has been sent to the government recently, said a top BSF Official.
- The CIBMS project will vastly improve the capability of BSF in detecting and controlling the cross border crimes like illegal infiltration, smuggling of contraband goods, human trafficking and cross border terrorism etc.
- Smart fencing includes hitech surveillance system that would create an invisible electronic barrier on land, water and even in air and underground and would help the BSF detect and foil infiltration bids in most difficult terrains
In an interaction with the visiting Tamil Nadu journalists near Indo-Pak border in Kutch, a top BSF Official said, “The India-Pak border will be more fortified by the use of advanced technology. We are planning to replace the existing fencing with the newly designed smart fencing with advanced features. A proposal has been prepared and sent to the government to replace 13 km of fencing in this stretch and the entire stretch would be converted as smart fencing in a phased manner’’.
The government has sanctioned funds to erect Smart fencing for a total length of 453.233 km, including 198.352 km new erection and 254.871 km replacement. So far new erection has been completed along 90.610 km, including new erection for 47.387 km and replacement 42.223 km and work under progress are 256.209 km, the official sources said.
The Border Security Force (BSF) is the first line of national force guarding the nation from our enemies at the borders. Whenever the attack from our enemies escalates in large scale, army rushing in to fight, the official added.

It may be recalled that the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had inaugurated two pilot smart fencing projects each with a length of 5.5 kms along the Indo-Pak International borders in Jummu on September 11, 2018 with CIBMS programme when he held the portfolio of Home Ministry.
The smart border fencing projects built under the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) programme was the first of its kind in the country.
Smart fencing includes hitech surveillance system that would create an invisible electronic barrier on land, water and even in air and underground and would help the BSF detect and foil infiltration bids in most difficult terrains. The CIBMS is designed to guard stretches where physical surveillance is not possible either due to inhospitable terrain or riverine borders.
The CIBMS project will vastly improve the capability of BSF in detecting and controlling the cross border crimes like illegal infiltration, smuggling of contraband goods, human trafficking and cross border terrorism etc.
CIBMS involves deployment of a range of state-of-the-art surveillance technologies — thermal imagers, infra-red and laser-based intruder alarms, aerostats for aerial surveillance, unattended ground sensors that can help detect intrusion bids, radars, sonar systems to secure riverine borders, fibre-optic sensors and a command and control system that shall receive data from all surveillance devices in real time. The signals reach the Unified Command and Control Centre where the BSF can monitor the border on real-time basis. The CIBMS enables round-the-clock surveillance on border and under different weather conditions be it in dust storm, fog or rain.
Installation of smart fencing will drastically reduce the number of casualties of our jawans on borders and the stress level among the jawans would also reduce to a large extent.

Smart fencing launched in Indo-Bangladesh border in 2019
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had launched the Smart Fencing on Indo-Bangladesh border in March 2019. Two pilot projects covering about 71 Kms on Indo-Pakistan Border (10 Kms) and Indo-Bangladesh Border (61 Kms) of Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) have been completed.
India has the border with Pakistan with the length 3,323 km. Length of International border between India Pakistan (excluding JK) 2,300 km.
