Eight fishermen from Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu were arrested during the early hours of Tuesday by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
The fishermen were fishing near Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar The arrested fishermen were taken to the Mannar Naval camp in Sri Lanka along with their mechanised fishing boat.
“Yesterday, 430 mechanised boats from Rameswaram ventured into the sea for fishing. Of that, a boat, along with eight crew members, was apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy,” announced Assistant Director of Fisheries of Rameswaram.
Fishermen association leader R Rajendran has sought the immediate intervention of the state and Union governments for the arrested fishermen’s release. He said, “The arrest of our fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy is highly deplorable and we strongly raise our protest against this inhuman treatment by the Sri Lankan Navy.”
