COIMBATORE, DECEMBER 4
A middle aged man was arrested by police, after he had assaulted the chief manager of a nationalised bank with weapons on Tuesday. Irked over non-sanctioning of loan to the tune of Rs. 1-crore was the reason for the attack, police sources said.
Race Course police said that K. Vetrivelan (44) of Somayampalayam in Coimbatore city had entered into the Ramanathapuram branch of Canara Bank with air pistol and few other minor weapons like razor.
They said that the arrested man also attacked a middleman who had promised to arrange a loan of Rs. 1-crore to Vetrivelan, who was running a small-scale industry.
Few other bank employees who prevented the man from attacking the Chief Manager said to have sustained minor injuries.
According to police, Vetrivelan had approached the Ramanathapuram branch of Canara Bank through a middleman Gunabalan, seeking a loan of Rs. 1 crore during March.
The chief manager Chandrasekar who had reportedly rejected to process the loan documents informed Vetrivelan. Angered over this, the alleged denial of the loan, he visited the bank around 11.20 a.m. on Tuesday and ‘attacked’ the manager. The police said that he had also carried a razor blade to threaten the bank manager and the middleman.
Investigations revealed that the Vetrivelan had already availed a loan of Rs. 25 lakh from another bank a few years ago, said the Race Course police.
In the meantime, he got the contact of Gunabalan in March this year who allegedly promised to arrange another loan to tune of Rs. 1 crore from Canara Bank. However, the loan request had not been processed since March, said the police.
A case under sections 352, 452, 420 and 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Vetrivelan. Police took away the CCTV footages of the attack. The weapons used by the attacker were seized.
