The Madras High Court has constituted two committees headed by a retired district judge to organize jallikattu (bull taming) at Avaniapuram and Alanganallur, respectively, in Madurai district this year. The court also directed the court to monitor the jallikattu at Palamedu.
A division bench of Justice M. Duraiswamy and Justice T. Ravindran passed the order while hearing a batch of petitions filed before the Madurai Bench seeking inclusion of representatives from all communities in the jallikattu organizing committees and petitions with regard to disputes in organising jallikattu events at Avaniapuram, Alanganallur and Palamedu.
The bench appointed retired principal district judge C Manickam as the chairman and appointed collector T G Vinay, Madurai city commissioner of police S. Davidson Devasirvadham and Corporation Commissioner S. Visakan as members of the organizing committee to conduct jallikattu at Avaniapuram on January 15.
The retired judge, the collector, south zone IG K P Shanmuga Rajeswaran and assistant director of town panchayat were appointed as members of the organizing committee to conduct jallikattu at Alanganallur on January 17.
As far as Palamedu jallikattu festival is concerned, the judges stated that the already existing committee named ‘Grama Pothu Mahalinga Swami Madathu Committee’, which had conducted the event in Palamedu last year, can conduct the festival this year too, but under the supervision of the court-appointed organising committee.
