The Madras High Court granted permission to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to take out processions on October 2 at 51 places throughout Tamil Nadu, subject to certain conditions. The bench of Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan passed this order while hearing a batch of writ petitions filed by RSS office-bearers.

The writ petition had sought permission from the court to conduct route marches in several districts in the state while wearing their uniform. The court, in its initial order, directed the police to grant permission on or before September 28 for the route march after obtaining the procession routes and imposing stringent conditions to maintain law and order.

  • The procession is to commemorate the RSS founding day, to celebrate the 75th year of Independence and the centenary of BR Ambedkar.
  • The court directed the police to grant permission on or before September 28 for the route march after obtaining the procession routes and imposing stringent conditions to maintain law and order.

The court has also said that it will give the detailed orders later. According to advocate Rabu Manohar, who represented the Sivakasi unit of the RSS, said that cadres would be wearing their uniforms, led by a musical band and conducting public meetings.

He added that despite approaching the police authorities for permission, there was no response to date.

The RSS route march across Tamil Nadu has been planned for October 2. The procession is to commemorate the RSS founding day, to celebrate the 75th year of Independence and the centenary of BR Ambedkar.

State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammed Jinnah expressed fear the rallies could trigger violence, as there were places of other religious worship en route to the procession.

They should not shout slogans disgracing other religions, carry any weapons and indulge in any violent activities. If they comply with all these stipulations, permission may be granted, subject to the imposition of certain more conditions, he added.
