In order to maintain purity and sanctity of the places of worship, the Madras High Court has banned mobile phones in temples across Tamil Nadu.

To avoid inconvenience to people, the court said phone deposit lockers should be set up at temples.

Security personnel will also be appointed to ensure compliance of this order.

The high order came following a plea seeking ban on use of mobile phones at the Subramanya Swamy temple. The petitioner argued that mobile phones distract people and clicking pictures of deities is a violation of rules of agamas.

He also said photography could endanger security of temples besides apprehensions in women over their pictures being clicked without their consent. He also wanted compliance of decent dress code for decorum.
