AHMEDABAD, JAN 29
A total of 300 selected SD Cadets of all 17 NCC Directorates attended the 12-day ‘Advanced Leadership Camp’ – ALC-III – conducted by the NCC Directorate, Gujarat at Thamna, Anand in Gujarat from January 17 to 28, 2020. It was held under the stewardship of Brig R K Gaikwad, the Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, VV Nagar.
The participating Cadets have mostly chosen ‘Armed Forces’ as their first career option and will be appearing for the UPSC Exams for ‘Officers’ rank. The Camp afforded these NCC Cadets a unique opportunity to prepare more fruitfully to appear in the ‘Service Selection Board’ (SSB).
Many serving ‘Armed Forces Officers’ of NCC were actively involved in imparting Leadership Training to these Cadets. Domain experts with experience as Psychologist, Group Testing Officers and Interviewing Officers guided the Cadets, during the Camp.
An institutionalized ‘Leadership Training’ was imparted to the NCC Cadets through a scientific process of personality enhancement, development of soft skills, increased awareness and initiation into various leadership and management techniques.

The pace of the Camp was set initially with the first two days dedicated to specially formulated outdoor activity-based programme called ‘CADET ‘(Comprehensive All-round Development and Employability Training) developed by EXPA. The training included ‘ICE Breakers’ exercises followed by various workshops on Communication Techniques, Self-Understanding, Listening Skills, Team-Building exercises, Confidence- Building, Creative Thinking, and Public Speaking Techniques. Brig RK Magotra, DDG NCC Directorate Gujarat visited the Camp on January 20, 2020, and reviewed the training imparted.
Major General Roy Joseph appreciates creative teaching techniques employed
Major General Roy Joseph, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate Gujarat, inspected the Camp on January 23, 2020, and interacted with the cadets. While carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the instructions being imparted, he appreciated the creative teaching techniques employed and noted the perceptible difference it has made to the personalities of the attendees. The General Officer witnessed the Group Discussions, News Analysis, Debate, and Lecturettes of the Cadets and also shared his experiences.
At the end of the session, he addressed the Cadets and the staff at the Camp and motivated them to fulfill their goals. On the occasion, he also awarded four NCC staff for their dedication to the duty for the success of the Camp.
Several Inter-Directorate Competitions were conducted to add flavour to the Camp. In addition to Lecturette and Debate Competition, the Sports events included Volleyball, Cross Country and Tug-of-War. On Republic Day an impressive Parade by the NCC Cadets enthralled the audience of Umreth and Thamna villages.
Field visits widen cadets’ knowledge
Educational excursion to the ‘Amul Milk Collection Point’ and ‘Model Farming Techniques’, as well as, ‘Swadesh’ lecture, presentation and interactive session with Chandrakant Patel (Mukhi), Sarpanch Thamna, widened the horizon of the NCC Cadets enormously.
As per Cadets, the highlight of the Camp was their better understanding of the Psychological, Group Testing and Interviewing aspects of the ‘SSB Procedures’ and above all honing the nuances of leadership and communication skills through practical application to real-life situations. Univocally all Cadets expressed that they benefited extremely from the memorable experience of the Camp.
The Camp concluded with a Closing Ceremony that comprised a Cultural Programme, Prize Distribution and Closing Address by Brig R K Gaikwad, the Camp Comdt. This was followed by the traditional ‘Camp Barakhana‘. The response and the feedback of the participating Cadets were heartening, to say the least. The Cadets departed to their home states on January 28, 29, 2020, respectively.
NCC Special Entry Scheme
‘NCC Special Entry Scheme’ for Officers rank is an incentive for NCC Cadets with a ‘C’ Certificate (minimum ‘B’ Grading). It is a golden opportunity for the eligible NCC Cadets as they are exempted from giving the ‘Common Entrance Exams’ held by UPSC and are called directly for SSB, for grant of Short Service Commission in the Indian Army. These Officers’ vacancies have been earmarked for 45 NCC men and 05 NCC women in each batch.
