HIMMATNAGAR, OCT 10
Police have arrested a man and seized over 340 gram of mephedrone, a banned drug, worth around Rs 35 lakh from his possession in Sabarkantha district, an official said on Sunday.
The accused, Irshad Pathan (26), was caught following a tip-off on Saturday night near Piplodi village on a national highway connecting Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha to Ahmedabad, he said.
“Pathan was arrested after 348.6 gram of mephedrone was found in his possession when he was on way to Ahmedabad on a two-wheeler,” the official from Himmatnagar A-division police station said.
The accused has been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
An investigation was on to ascertain where the contraband was to be supplied and to whom, and since how long the accused was peddling drugs, the official said.
Mephedrone, also known as ”meow meow” or MD, is a synthetic stimulant.
Last month, in the single largest heroin haul in India, authorities seized around 3,000 kg of the drug, believed to be from Afghanistan and likely worth Rs 21,000 crore in the global market, from two containers at the Mundra port in Kutch district, officials earlier said.
