Marengo CIMS Hospital has all praise for a family from Bhuj exhibiting the ultimate act of humanity in donating the organs of their young family member who lost his life due to a brain hemorrhage and saving the lives of recipients unknown to them. Mahipal (Name changed) had a sudden brain stroke while at work in Bhuj. He was rushed by his family to hospitals and was finally brought to Marengo CIMS Hospital where he was declared “Brain dead”.
The family embraced courage and humanity to go on to donate the organs of the deceased to save four lives and restore the sight of two. Once the organs were retrieved, the kidneys and liver were immediately prepared to be transplanted in recipients admitted in Marengo CIMS Hospital itself, while the heart and the eyes were donated to a government hospital and semi-government institute respectively.

Commenting on this, Dr Keyur Parikh, Chairman, Marengo CIMS Hospital says “Marengo Asia Hospitals expresses deep heartfelt gratitude to the patient’s family who rose above their grief to extend their magnanimous service of organ donation and save lives. We are grateful to every family which exemplifies humanity itself in donating the organs of their deceased family member. Research reveals innumerable deaths every year due to a shortage of organs. Organ donation has to be embraced much more by families who lose their family members and are counseled on organ donation. This act can result in saving many lives that are waiting endlessly for an organ.”

Dr. Siddharth Mavani, Director Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “The team of doctors conducted two kidney transplants following the organs retrieved from the deceased person here at Marengo CIMS Hospital. We are grateful to the family for this act of nobility for donating the organs. The hospital records a high number of kidney transplants done every year and we have achieved a mark of 61 kidney transplants to date. Marengo CIMS Hospital has emerged as a preferred destination for other organ transplants as well, such as heart, liver, Bone marrow, and lungs. Approximately 10 percent of the Indian population is known to suffer from chronic kidney diseases revealing an alarming number. With a shortage of organs, the patients on the list for a transplant will have a long wait.”
Dr Puneet Singla, Liver Transplant Surgeon, Marengo Asia Hospitals says, “End-stage failure of any organ is challenging for the family awaiting an organ. At such times families that rise above their personal loss to donate organs of their deceased family member to save the lives of unknown persons redefine humanity at its best. Currently, liver disease is a significant health burden with a recorded 18.3% deaths due to liver failure in India of the total global number of two million in the year 2015. The final treatment to end-stage liver failures remains a liver transplant.”.
Dr Vikas Patel, Consultant, Institute of Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, Marengo CIMS Hospital, says, “When a patient is declared ‘brain dead’, the healthy organs of the deceased can be retrieved within a designated time span to be transplanted in a patient awaiting an organ. There are rising numbers of brain deaths in India where families can be appropriately counseled on organ donation. Increasing awareness of this act of nobility can save many more lives which are lost due to the unavailability of organs. With a rising number of organ donations from families in the state of Gujarat, patients waiting for organs will see some change in society.”
India has an organ donation rate of 0.54 per million population. Due to a significant paucity of organs, there are hundreds of lives lost. With awareness of organ donation being stepped up, both by the government and private healthcare providers, cadaveric donations are on a small rise. The laws of registering for organs by recipients have also been redefined by the government and this opens further doors for recipients. Celebrities and people recognized in societies have been contributing to busting myths about organ donation, have pledged their organs, and have contributed to spreading increased awareness of this humanitarian act in recent times.
