Bone marrow donation need of the hour
Bone marrow donation is crucial in saving lives because it can potentially cure various blood-related diseases. There are 25 out of 100 chances that a person can find a matched bone marrow donor from within the family. Majority patients need to reach out to unrelated donors to save their lives. The probability of finding the right match from an unrelated blood stem cell donor is 1 in 10,000 as it depends on how closely the HLA typing matches between a donor and a patient.
A blood stem cell donor’s registry in India works by helping patients battling blood cancer and blood disorders to find an unrelated matching donor and give them a second chance at life.
Healthy stem cells are extracted from the donor’s bone marrow and then infused into the recipient. These infused cells travel through the bloodstream to the bone marrow where they develop into new, healthy marrow cells.
In Ahmedabad, Morrow Donor Registry of India has launched its Gujarat Chapter in association with The Indian Red Cross Society to promote this life-saving donation.
Anyone in the age group of 5 years to 65 can make donation.
