Generally people have been very scared of spine surgeries with a fear of getting paralyzed or bed-ridden or dependent after operation. But Gleneagles Global Health City, one of the leading multi-specialty facilities, in Perumbakkam allayed this fear by adopting the Endoscopic Spine Surgeries’ which have become safer and more reliable to treat these spine related ailments.
It has achieved a milestone of 578 successful ‘Endoscopic Spine Surgeries’ from 2015 with success rate of 98%, said its CEO Dr Alok Khullar here on Wednesday.
About one-third of them were Transforaminal discectomies performed under local anesthesia and the remaining were performed by Interlaminar approach under general anesthesia. Out of the 578, almost 300 were performed in the past three years.

Lauding the selfless service of the team of doctors headed by Dr Phani Kiran, Senior Consultant – Spine Surgeon, Gleneagles Global Health City, actor Naveen Chandra said he will take up with the film fraternity on the safe ‘Endoscopic Spine Surgery’ being performed at GGHC.
The participants talked about how their lives had changed for the better after the surgery.

Natarajan, who had undergone this procedure, shared his experience, “I had been suffering from morbid obesity weighing 142 kgs, with BMI of 44kg/sqm had obstructive sleep apnoea and had a L3-4 disc prolapse with severe radiating pain in both legs, as per doctors report the condition would likely to cause paralysis in both lower limbs if it worsened some more. I approached the Spine Department at Gleneagles Global Health City for the treatment, Thanks to hospital for performing endoscopic spine surgery at right time as I was able to return to my daily activities within a remarkably short period. I’m incredibly grateful to the skilled medical team.”
The age group of patients who underwent endoscopic lumbar spine surgery ranged from 17 years to 80 years, however most of them were in the age group of 40 – 60 years. There were no cases of major complications such as paralysis. The success rate of the endoscopic spine surgery is 98%. There were about 1% of patients who developed a recurrent disc prolapse at the same level. There were another 1% who developed infection (most having diseases causing lower immunity). They recovered well after appropriate treatment for the recurrence/infection.
