With the advent of private satellite TV channels, hearing Tamil news with correct pronunciation is a passé. However, the All India Radio (AIR) still maintains its uniqueness in preserving the Classical Language Tamil by delivering news, views in the purest form of Senthamizh..
One such mellifluous voice of Tamil AIR, Saroj Narayanasamy, is no more. All avid news hearers of AIR will never forget her for the lifetime as she was so popular among the listeners.
- In August 2016, the Doordarshan Podhigai Channel in Tamil,broadcast a two-hour programme on her, covering her life, family, achievements and other notable features
- Post her stint at All India Radio, she worked as a Consultant in the New Delhi Television (NDTV) for about four years, managing Star Vijay News, the Tamil Channel of the Star Group.
Akaasahvani Seidhigal Vaasipadhu (reading AIR news is) Saroj Narayanasamy, who has been synonymous with the Tamil Nadu followers, as she passed away in Mumbai on Saturday night. Saroj Narayanswami holds an English Literature Honours Degree from Bombay University, She has done a course in Broadcast Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi.
She worked as a Tamil News Reader cum Translator in the Tamil News Unit of the News Services Division of All India Radio, New Delhi. Tamil News was broadcast not just to Tamil Nadu but all over South East Asia, given the large Tamil speaking diaspora there. She was the News In charge of the Tamil Unit for over twenty years.
Post her stint at All India Radio, she worked as a Consultant in the New Delhi Television (NDTV) for about four years, managing Star Vijay News, the Tamil Channel of the Star Group. NDTV was the content provider for Star Vijay News. She was drafted as the official interpreter of Tamil Movies for the Jury, both for Indian and International Film Festivals.
She has done entire book translations, both Hindi and English to Tamil, for the Publications Division of the Information Broadcasting Ministry and the UNICEF. She has also been the official interpreter to the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, late MG Ramachandran, during Chief Ministers Conferences. Have done several translations and voice overs for Documentaries, both Hindi and English to Tamil, for the Films Division of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, as also News reels and News magazines.
A regular, prolific columnist, she has been contributing interviews and articles on various subjects, especially those involving public figures, politicians and sportsmen. Most leading Tamil weeklies and dailies have carried her writings. She has written several articles for the UNICEF on themes like child health, nutrition, leprosy eradication, converting them to publications in Tamil magazines or pamphlets and handouts.
She has been doing sub titling, spotting and voice overs for Tamil movies. Recently, in August 2016, the Doordarshan Podhigai Channel in Tamil, broadcast a two-hour programme on her, covering her life, family, achievements and other notable features. This has also been uploaded on Youtube by the Channel. The feedback received from fans and well wishers all over the world, has been most gratifying and humbling.
It is the first instance of a news broadcaster being accorded such a distinction by Doordarshan.
