GANDHINAGAR, FEB 17

In a swift, daring, and intelligence-driven overnight operation on February 16, 2026, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in close coordination with the Gujarat Anti‑Terrorism Squad (ATS), intercepted a suspicious foreign speed boat carrying 203 kg of crystalline drug-like substance near the notional International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), delivering yet another decisive blow to transnational narcotics trafficking.

The high-stakes operation unfolded after the Gujarat ATS shared corroborated intelligence inputs about a suspected drug smuggling attempt at sea. Acting immediately, an ICG ship from the Coast Guard Region (North West), already on multi-mission deployment, was diverted to intercept the suspect vessel operating in close proximity to the IMBL — a known corridor exploited by international drug syndicates.

Despite the pitch-dark night and operational challenges at sea, the ICG ship successfully located the suspect boat using a combination of human intelligence and advanced technical surveillance systems. On spotting the approaching Coast Guard vessel, the suspect boat attempted to flee at high speed towards the notional IMBL in an apparent bid to evade capture and cross into foreign waters.

Demonstrating exceptional maritime vigilance and operational precision, the Coast Guard ship pursued the fleeing vessel, overcoming the initial separation distance. The speed boat was eventually chased down, intercepted, and boarded by ICG personnel.

Upon boarding, officials found the vessel manned by two crew members of foreign nationality. A thorough search of the boat led to the discovery of 203 packets, each weighing one kilogram, containing crystalline substance suspected to be narcotics, carefully concealed onboard.

The apprehended vessel has been escorted to Porbandar by the Indian Coast Guard for further investigation and chemical analysis of the seized substance. Authorities will conduct detailed forensic examination to determine the exact nature, origin, and destination of the narcotics consignment, as well as the broader network involved.

This successful interception underscores the growing operational synergy between the Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat ATS in safeguarding India’s maritime frontiers. Such joint operations have led to numerous major seizures in recent years, reflecting India’s strengthened coastal surveillance architecture and zero-tolerance approach towards drug trafficking and maritime crime.

Officials noted that the seamless coordination between maritime forces and intelligence agencies continues to play a pivotal role in neutralising emerging security threats and reinforcing India’s coastal security framework, particularly along sensitive western seaboard zones vulnerable to cross-border smuggling.
