In a landmark moment for rail passengers across Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery delta, the much-awaited Trichy–Tambaram Intercity Express began its maiden regularised run on Sunday, transforming years of public demand into a permanent connectivity lifeline between the delta region and Chennai.

The train, which had been operating as a special service since October 2024, was officially regularised from March 1, 2026, following sustained passenger patronage and persistent appeals from railway users’ associations and public representatives.
The arrival of Train No. 16808 at Kumbakonam at around 7.25 am was greeted with jubilation. Members of the Thanjavur District Railway Users Association (TANDRUA), Kumbakonam All Traders Association and Papanasam Train Passengers Association accorded the train a grand welcome by showering floral petals and garlanding the locomotive.
Loco Pilots Sudalai Muthu and Karthi were honoured with shawls and sweets in recognition of their service, while passengers received greeting cards displaying the train timetable, along with awareness messages and sweets to mark the historic occasion.
Rail users’ associations described the regularisation as the culmination of persistent efforts to secure improved rail connectivity for thousands of daily commuters, students, traders and professionals from the delta districts.
A representative of the Thanjavur District Railway Users Association said: “This train was the long-pending demand of passengers from the delta districts. Its regularisation is a major relief and will greatly improve connectivity to Chennai.”
Rail activist Vedam Murali said: “The overwhelming patronage clearly demonstrated the need for this service. Regularising the train reflects the Railway Ministry’s responsiveness to genuine passenger demand.”
A member of the Kumbakonam All Traders Association added: “This intercity express will significantly benefit traders, business travellers and students, strengthening economic and social links between the delta region and the state capital.”

• Departs Trichy: 5.35 am
• Thanjavur: 6.28 am
• Papanasam: 6.48 am
• Kumbakonam: 7.00 am
• Arrives Tambaram: 12.30 pm
Train No. 16807 Tambaram–Trichy Intercity Express
• Departs Tambaram: 3.30 pm
• Kumbakonam: 8.20 pm
• Papanasam: 8.31 pm
• Thanjavur: 9.20 pm
• Arrives Trichy: 10.40 pm
The train will operate five days a week, except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
A Connectivity Milestone for the Cauvery Delta
The regularisation of the intercity express marks a major boost to regional mobility, providing a reliable, affordable and time-efficient travel option linking key delta towns such as Thanjavur, Papanasam and Kumbakonam with Chennai.
Beyond passenger convenience, the train is expected to support economic growth, facilitate education and employment access, and strengthen cultural and commercial ties between southern Tamil Nadu and the state capital.
For thousands of passengers, the train’s permanent status represents more than a timetable update—it is the fulfilment of a long-cherished aspiration.
