Top BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, S. Jaishankar and Nitin Gadkari retained their key ministries as Prime Minister Narendra Modi allocated portfolios to the newly-inducted ministers on Monday.

  • Gujarat gets 6 berths: BJP chief CR Paatil is the new Jal Shakti Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya made Minister of Labour and Employment; and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports
  • Nirmala Sitharaman, Dr S Jaishankar and Dr L Murugan are Tamils but Rajya Sabha MPs from different States
  • South India gets 13 posts as H. D. Kumaraswamy rewarded with heavy industries and steel ministries

Amit Shah will continue as the home minister while Rajnath Singh has retained the defence ministry. Gadkari will continue as the road transport and highways minister.

Nirmala Sitharaman and S. Jaishankar will continue as the finance and external affairs ministers, respectively. The education ministry has been allocated again to Dharmendra Pradhan.

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the new agriculture and rural development minister, while BJP president J.P. Nadda has been given the health ministry.

Gujarat BJP chief CR Paatil is the new Jal Shakti Minister. Mansukh Mandaviya made Minister of Labour and Employment; and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The portfolios were announced after Modi held the first meeting of his new cabinet on Monday evening.

The newly-inducted ministers arrived at the prime minister’s 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, residence around 5 pm and attended the meeting, a day after taking oath.
