Greater awareness among consumers is essential to combat the malpractice of using recycled tins in packaging edible oils and to highlight the importance of safe packaging practices, stated the Gujarat Oil Refiners Association. On the occasion of National Consumer Day, observed annually on December 24 to raise awareness about consumer rights, the association underscored the health risks posed by non-compliance with food safety regulations.
“Consumer safety must remain a top priority for the industry. While regulatory authorities have stepped up enforcement, manufacturers must comply with packaging standards, and consumers need to be vigilant when purchasing edible oils. Safe packaging is critical to safeguarding public health,” said Snehal Patel, Secretary of the Gujarat Oil Refiners Association.

Despite efforts by regulatory authorities like the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA), the issue remains persistent. FSSAI has issued legal notices to over 200 manufacturers, millers, and re-packers across Gujarat for violations of packaging norms, with 400 additional cases under investigation. Major hubs such as Ahmedabad, Sanand, Mehsana, Surat, and Rajkot have been identified as hotspots for these violations, despite clear guidelines prohibiting the reuse of tin containers for food packaging under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation of 2018.
These regulations mandate the use of prime-grade tin plates to ensure consumer safety, as recycled tins often contain harmful contaminants that can leach into edible oils. These contaminants pose serious health risks, including foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, and gastrointestinal problems. Additionally, the improper packaging fails to protect oils from environmental factors, leading to spoilage and reduced shelf life.
The Gujarat FDCA has also directed its District Designated Officers to monitor violators and take strict legal action against offenders. Consumers are advised to check for proper labelling, verify FSSAI license numbers, and avoid products with substandard packaging to ensure they purchase safe and high-quality edible oils.
National Consumer Day serves as a crucial reminder for all stakeholders—regulators, manufacturers, and consumers—to collaborate in ensuring a transparent and safe food supply chain. Through stronger enforcement, increased awareness, and collective action, the edible oil industry can address these challenges and uphold consumer trust.
