Southern Railway observed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day at its Headquarters in Chennai, as well as in the six divisions – Chennai, Salem, Madurai, Tiruchchirappalli, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram Divisions – on Sunday to commemorate the 146th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first deputy prime minister and great leader who played an important role in the unification of India, says a release.
In the morning, John Thomas, General Manager, Southern Railway virtually administered Ekta Diwas Pledge to all officers and staff spread over in the six divisions. Accordingly, Southern Railway Officers and staff took the pledge to dedicate themselves to preserve the unity, integrity and security of the nation.

Later in the evening, GM John administered the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge to all the RPF Personnel at the Southern Railway headquarters. Along with Birendra Kumar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, Railway Protection Force, Southern Railway and he accepted the Guard of Honour of the RPF.

Gayatri, Secretary to the General Manager; Santhosh Chandran, Dy Chief Security Commissioner; Senthil Kumar, Sr Divisional Security Commissioner; Saurav Kumar, and Raju, Asst Security Commissioners, other senior RPF officers were present on the occasion.
In another event, the Railway Protection Force of Chennai Division organized a “Run For Unity” as part of the “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotasav” at RPF Parade Ground, Ayanavaram on Sunday which was flagged off by Asian Games Silver medalist Sardha Narayan.
75 newly joined RPF Women personnel participated in the 3.5-km run covering ICF and Railway colony area.
Similar programmes were conducted in all the six Divisions of Southern Railway to mark the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the statement added.
