Producer-Director Pa Ranjith has announced that ‘Writer’, a crime thriller, starring actor-director Samuthirakani in lead role will hit the cinema screens on Friday, December 24, a day before the Christmas Day.
Speaking with navjeevanexpress.com, Pa Ranjit said, “My ‘Neelam Productions’ had already made a great impact in the Tamil film industry and also in Tamil society for producing good social content films in the industry. My former assistant director Franklin Jacob has directed ‘Writer’ very well and it will be Christmas treat for Tamil fans around the globe.”
“Producer Atithi had met me as a fan. She had seen Superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Kalaa’ twice. After having a great discussion, both of us have decided to produce ‘Writer’. First, she wanted me to direct this film but it could not happen as I was already engaged in many films. Atithi had a passion for making socio-conscious films. Later, Golden Ratio and Jetty Productions have joined hands with us. Since they were well aware of my political inclinations, we have decided to make at least five films. I was very particular about the film’s story as it should not portray dirty politics. My thought was that all films made under Neelam Productions ought to be people-centric,” added Pa Ranjit.
To a query on what made him to produce this film, Pa Ranjit replied that its story was a different one and hitherto not told in Tamil cinema and also it was very close to my heart. While reading the storyline, my conscience told me that this would become a blockbuster movie. Even during the shootings I thought that this film would come out technically superior. This film’s music has been scored exceptionally well by Govind Vasanta, one of my favourite music directors.
Talking about the selection of the film’s lead actor, Pa Ranjit said that during the story discussion itself I have decided to meet Samuthirakani Anna. As I expected, Anna read the story and immediately gave his consent to act in this vital role. With his characteristic acting skills, Samuthirakani brought alive the character of Thangaraj in a very commendable manner. When comparing with his other films, he had delivered a unique and unforgettable character.
Sharing his thoughths with this correspondent, actor-director Samuthirakani said, “I would like to convey my hearty congratulations to all producers as well as casting and technical crews. I used to enjoy and appreciate the dedication of my colleagues. It is in my blood to reach the shooting spot in time and observe the preparatory works of all. Debutant director Franklin and cameraman Pradeep’s professionalism mesmerized me. ‘Writer’ is the outcome one of the best teams hardwork and dedication. For the first time, I have seen the joint effort and artistic creation in this film. Each one of us has contributed a lot for the success of this film like that of their own. It is needless to elaborate on their exemplary hardwork. This film will make a great impact among the masses and sure hit. I wish the film a grand success.”
“This is my debut film as a director and I am indebted to convey my gratitude to one and all. I have learnt the art of directing from my guru Pa Ranjit and I am forever grateful to him in my life. Also I am thankful to all producers for having reposed faith in my capabilities. Samuthirakani was impressed with the story and agreed to don the role of Thankaraj. True to his style, he has infused new life into the character of Thankaraj. Music director Govind Vasantha and cameraman Pradeep have toiled hard. This film is the effort of a good team, including tech crew. I will be failing in my duty if I do not express my gratitude to all for giving me this great opportunity to work with,” said director Franklin Jacob.
The film shines a light on the layers of power within the police department. The teaser shows Samuthirakani playing the role of a writer in a police station. One of the dialogues that Samuthirakani utters is powerful.
He says, “In the police force, anyone who is not in power is a thug. I am an old thug. And you are a new thug to them. That is the only difference.”
In a nutshell, the story of the film revolves around an honest writer in a corrupt police administration environment.
Iniya, Bose Venkat, Subramanium Siva, Hari Krishnan, Lizzie Antony and Maheshwari have acted in important roles. The movie is co-produced by “Little Red Car Films” and “Golden Ratio Films” along with “Neelam Productions.”
