AHMEDABAD / NEW DELHI, OCT 13
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports about the tragic collapse of an advertising hoarding from the roof of a seven-storey building in Bopal, Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of two workers and left one critically injured on September 27, 2025.
Taking a serious view of the incident, the Commission noted that the contents of the report, if true, indicate gross negligence and violation of basic human rights of the workers. Consequently, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat, and the Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
According to media reports published on September 29, 2025, around 15 labourers were engaged in installing a large hoarding nearly 80 feet high on the rooftop of a residential complex when the structure suddenly gave way. Ten workers fell from the building—two succumbed to injuries, one sustained grievous injuries, and seven others suffered minor wounds. The injured workers were immediately taken to hospital for treatment.
The NHRC has emphasized that the safety of contract and construction workers must remain a priority, and called upon authorities to ensure strict enforcement of safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
