The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday conducted searches at Thanjavur, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Villupuram, Thirunelveli and Mayiladuthurai in connection with the 2019 murder of a former Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) functionary at Thirubhuvanam in Thanjavur district, police sources here said.
Ramalingam was hacked to death by a group of individuals, hours after he reportedly questioned some alleged conversion attempts in the town in 2019.
Eighteen members of PFI and SDPI were charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The NIA has already apprehended 13 persons in connection with the murder, while a few suspects are said to be absconding.

The NIA chargesheet stated that Popular Front of India (PFI) and Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) activists murdered Ramalingam on February 5, 2019 in Thiruvidaimaruthur in Thanjavur district, hours after he reportedly questioned some alleged conversion attempts in the town.
NIA officials are also conducting raids on the residence of Nellai Mubarak, who is the State Head of SDPI.
The manhunt is on for Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Abdul Hameed, Burhanudeen, Shahul Hameed and Nagel Haasan. Police have also announced a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh each to anyone who can provide information about the accused.
