  • NORTH KARNATAKA GETS A CONNECTIVITY BOOST: Railway Minister announces plans for another sleeper service linking Bengaluru with the Hubballi region and extending towards Pune and Mumbai.
  • MORE ROUTES ON THE RAILWAY RADAR: Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat service is expected within weeks, subject to electrification and successful testing.
  • PM CALLS IT A GAME CHANGER: Narendra Modi says the service will particularly benefit young people, IT professionals and students across three states.

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the SMVT Bengaluru–Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai, Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on Sunday in the presence of Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and H. D. Kumaraswamy, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna, Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje and other dignitaries.

The launch marks another step in Indian Railways’ expansion of modern overnight services, offering passengers an additional travel option between two of the country’s most important metropolitan centres.

Prime Minister sees a game-changer

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the new service, describing it as a major boost to connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai. In a post on X, he said:

“Another step towards better rail connectivity and that too from Bengaluru, the city of technology and innovation! The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be a game changer for connectivity between Bengaluru and Mumbai. This train will benefit Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, especially benefitting youngsters, IT professionals and students.”

The Prime Minister’s message underscored the wider regional significance of the service, particularly for young people, technology professionals and students whose personal and professional networks extend across state boundaries.

Three states, a string of important stops

The train will connect SMVT Bengaluru with CSMT Mumbai through Anantapur and Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh; Raichur, Yadgir, Wadi and Kalaburagi in Karnataka; and Solapur, Pune and Kalyan in Maharashtra.

The route is expected to improve overnight access to several important commercial, educational and regional centres. In particular, North Karnataka stands to gain from an additional premium overnight rail option, connecting its towns more conveniently with Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Vaishnaw said the service would link Bengaluru, a major IT and startup hub, with Mumbai, India’s financial capital. He also announced plans for another Vande Bharat Sleeper service originating from Bengaluru, connecting the northern parts of Karnataka towards the Hubballi region and proceeding towards Pune and Mumbai.

Sleeper service built around the clock

The Bengaluru-originating train will depart SMVT Bengaluru at 7.45 pm and reach CSMT Mumbai at 11.55 am the following day. In the return direction, it will leave CSMT at 8.10 pm and arrive at SMVT Bengaluru at 12 noon the next day.

The service will operate six days a week, except Mondays from Bengaluru and Tuesdays from Mumbai.

The overnight schedule is designed to help passengers make better use of their daytime, while providing a convenient alternative for long-distance travel. The service is expected to benefit business travellers, students, families and tourists, besides passengers boarding at intermediate stations.

Following the introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper services on the Howrah–Guwahati corridor in January 2026 and the flag-off of the Varanasi–New Delhi service on Saturday, the Bengaluru–Mumbai launch further expands the network of modern overnight rail connectivity.
Bengaluru–Mangaluru link also in the pipeline

Vaishnaw announced that Vande Bharat services between Bengaluru and Mangaluru are expected to commence within the next few weeks, subject to completion of electrification and successful testing on the route.

The proposed service is expected to strengthen connectivity between Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka, offering a faster and more comfortable travel option.
The Railway Minister also highlighted the expansion of high-speed rail connectivity in Karnataka, referring to proposed journey times of 73 minutes between Bengaluru and Chennai and approximately two hours and 10 minutes between Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Karnataka’s railway infrastructure gets a push

Pralhad Joshi welcomed the new service and appreciated the Railway Ministry’s efforts to strengthen connectivity, particularly across North Karnataka. He referred to increased allocations for railway infrastructure and the progress of development works across the state.

Joshi also highlighted railway safety improvements, stating that accident rates had fallen from 135 to 16 following the rollout of the Kavach train-protection system. He said the institutional objective remained achieving zero accidents.

H. D. Kumaraswamy welcomed the Bengaluru–Mumbai sleeper service and the proposed Bengaluru–Mangaluru connectivity. He said the initiatives would benefit not only Karnataka residents but also migrant workers and families from states such as West Bengal, Assam and Bihar living in Bengaluru.

V. Somanna highlighted the transformation of railway infrastructure in Karnataka, stating that projects worth approximately ₹52,000 crore were under way in the state. He referred to efforts to accelerate long-pending projects, restore train services, build railway overbridges and underbridges, and modernise stations across Bengaluru and other important centres.

The Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express thus represents more than a new train on a busy corridor. It is part of a wider effort to connect economic hubs, improve access for smaller cities and strengthen passenger mobility through modern railway infrastructure.
