Nonagenarian and the legendary photographer of Gujarat Padmashri Zaverilal Mehta has passed away here on Monday. He was 97.
He had been ailing for over a fortnight due to old age and its concomitant problems. The well-known personalities of the journalistic world and his family have been mourned by his death. Zaverilal Mehta breathed his last at his daughter Kanan Joshi’s house.
‘A picture is worth a thousand words’ is probably the aptest way to talk about the veteran photojournalist. After starting his career as a freelancer for various English newspapers, Mehta has been telling stories from Gujarat through his photographs for decades.
Associated with Gujarat Samachar, states largest and oldest daily, since the mid-80s, Mehta’s camera has captured compelling stories – the devastating Kutch cyclone of 1998 and the 2001 earthquake. He has also documented the life and time of as many as 13 chief ministers of the state through his lens.
Zaverilal Dalpatram Mehta was the most experienced photojournalist of Gujarat Samachar newspaper. He has a career spanning more than 60 years in the newspaper world. He was known all over India for his candid photos. A photojournalist, he was honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 2018 for his contribution to the field of literary and academic journalism.
Gujarat Journalists Union has bestowed on him Lifetime Achievement Award in July 2022 at the Gujarat Gaurav Awards-2022. The award was conferred upon him by Shree Panchgani Akhada Mahamandaleshwar Shri Shri 1008 Respected Kankeshwari Mataji.
Octogenarian and Gujarat Journalists Welfare Association president Yashwant Mehta and Gujarat Journalists Union president BR Prajapathi have conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family. The demise of Mehtaji is a great loss to the journalism and the journalists alike, the duo said.
