Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning, official sources said. Ponmudy, a senior DMK leader, appeared before the ED at its city office in Chennai.
The probe agency had in July conducted searches on properties associated with Ponmudy as well as his son Gautham Sigamani, who is an MP, in a money laundering case linked to alleged illegal sand mining. After the searches, the minister and his son were taken to the ED’s office for interrogation.

In July, a team of seven officers from the Enforcement Decorate conducted searches at Ponmudy’s residence in Chennai, Villupuram and at least a dozen properties linked to the minister, his son and his daughter. According to sources, several incriminating documents and foreign currency were seized during the searches.

Ponmudy is the second high-profile leader of the DMK to have come under ED radar, after minister V Senthil Balaji, who is facing charges in money laundering case.
