Conceding to the demand of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, the University Grants Commission has resolved that Company Secretary (CS) qualification will be treated equivalent to postgraduate degree holders, a top official of the ICSI said here on Saturday.
With this decision to raise the standard of CS and keep abreast of changes in law, the company secretary degree holder will now get an opportunity to pursue PhD in commerce and allied disciplines. According to ICSI, the course content has been designed to keep pace with the changing dynamics of global governance framework.
“The institute also has a full-fledged academic and research wing that enhances the acumen and expertise of its members and students and encourages them to undertake research in crucial areas like corporate governance, company law, CSR, tax laws, securities laws, capital market, finance, accounting, economic and other commercial laws etc,” said CS Nagendra D Rao, president, the ICSI.
Rao further added that “This recognition will open up another world of opportunities for company secretaries. Such recognitions reaffirm the fact that with the increasing focus on good governance, the demand for Company Secretaries, as skilled professionals, is both ubiquitous and inevitable. In Gujarat, seven universities, including – Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar; South Gujarat University, Surat; North Gujarat University, Patan; Bhavnagar University, Bhavnagar; Gujarat University, Ahmedabad; IIM Ahmedabad, are offering this doctoral programme.”
ICSI holds convocation
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India organised its Convocation for Western Region on Saturday for awarding certificates to approximately 650 Associate Members and 70 Fellow Members of the Western Region, admitted during the period from 1st October, 2020 to 31st March, 2021.
Principal Secretary (Labour) Anju Sharma, Government of Gujarat conferred the degrees and certificates. She also awarded prizes or medals to meritorious students (National) and winner students of National Level Competitions. The Convocation Ceremony was organized in accordance with the Covid-19 protocol. 264 Members were awarded in person at the ceremony. Company Secretaries of the period will hold a special place in the history of the ICSI and the country for embracing the opportunities brought in by the digital revolution in these trying times.
ICSI and Shalby Hospitals ink MoU
CS Nagendra D Rao, president, the ICSI and Associate Vice-President – Company Secretary of Shalby Hospitals who was also one of the past presidents of ICSI Ahmedabad Chapter Tushar Shah inked a memorandum of understanding on behalf of their institutions. Under this MoU, the students and members of the ICSI will get a slew of concessions from the hospital in getting medical treatment..
