Unit-2 was synchronised with the 765 kV grid on July 20, 2025, in a single attempt soon after completing the steam-blowing milestone. The unit then achieved a rapid progression from first coal firing to full readiness, completing its 72-hour full-load trial on the first attempt, within just 19 days — a landmark achievement that sets a new benchmark for India’s thermal power industry.
- Swift commissioning sets new industry benchmark with a 72-hour full-load trial in first attempt
- 1,320 MW now commercially operational, strengthening energy security for Uttar Pradesh & Assam
- Project to power 12 million households annually upon full commissioning; major boost to jobs & regional growth
- Supercritical technology, FGD, SCR and Zero-Liquid-Discharge reaffirm commitment to clean, efficient power
With Unit-2 now online, both Unit-1 and Unit-2 (total 1,320 MW) are commercially operational, significantly boosting reliable and sustainable power availability for Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
National Recognition: A Symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat
Union Minister for Coal Kishan Reddy, appreciating NLCIL’s achievement on X (Twitter), hailed the Ghatampur project as a symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, calling it “a strategic asset driving energy security, regional growth and national infrastructure development.”

Unit-1 Track Record: Strong Generation & Revenue
Unit-1 (660 MW), commissioned on December 12, 2024, was dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister on May 30, 2025.
It has generated 4,449.84 million units (MUs) to date, earning ₹ 2,638.69 crore in revenue.
Full Capacity Next Year: Powering 12 Million Households
With Unit-2 operational, the project is on course to complete Unit-3 in FY 2025-26, taking total capacity to 1,980 MW.
Once fully commissioned, the plant is expected to generate 14,743.08 MUs annually, enough to meet the annual energy needs of 12 million average Indian households.
Revenue is projected to increase to ₹ 8,453.3 crore annually after full commissioning.
Currently, 93.11% of generated power goes to Uttar Pradesh, with the balance allocated to other states, supporting inter-state energy equity.
Built for a Cleaner, Greener India
The Ghatampur project integrates advanced environmental systems, including:
- Supercritical boiler and turbine-generator technology
- Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD)
- Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
- Zero Liquid Discharge systems
These ensure compliance with the most stringent environmental norms, making the project among India’s most eco-aligned thermal power installations.
Massive Socio-Economic Impact
The project has become a major driver of regional socio-economic growth:
- 8,500 workers engaged during peak construction
- 4,000+ contract workers currently employed
- 25,000 direct & indirect jobs expected after all units are operational
This positions the Ghatampur project as one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest employment generators in the power sector.
Ensuring Fuel Security: Pachwara South Project
NUPPL is also advancing the Pachwara South Open Cast Project (PSOCP) in Jharkhand, which will provide a long-term captive coal supply. Coal production is expected to begin in FY 2025-26 in phases.
