AHMEDABAD, APRIL 20
Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) Board Member & Executive Chairman, State Investment Promotion Board, Government of Meghalaya and Chief Guest Ram Mohan Mishra, IAS reminisced ‘Father of Entrepreneurship Movement’ and EDII founder Padma Shri Dr VG Patel on Saturday on the eve of EDII’s 42nd Foundation Day here. He also praised Dr VG Patel’s vision and unparalleled zeal to give impetus to ‘entrepreneurship’ and urged the EDII to set up its campus in New Delhi so as to carry forward his legacy.
Speaking on the occasion, Ram Mohan Mishra said, “Entrepreneurship has been no less than a movement. And, EDII has pioneered this movement. Today, we all see a new era break open. The world, today recognizes the potential of entrepreneurship. The Indian state and the central governments are also promoting Entrepreneurship in a big way. Start-ups are getting all support. There is a strong knowledge, policy and support infrastructure for an innovative, start-up oriented India to flourish. I say with pride that India is a great place to be. We have favorable policies, liberalized environment, access to global technology and markets and a growing financial infrastructure. Such a progressive ecosystem is a great facilitator for the growth of entrepreneurship and promises unique competitiveness. I am glad we have institutions like EDII that are complementing efforts through training, incubation, capacity building and handholding. My compliments to EDII.”
Commenting on the evolution of entrepreneurship and start up ecosystem in India, over the years, Guest of Honour Dr. Sailendra Narain, EDII Governing Board Member and Former Chairman & Managing Director, SIDBI, said, “I have had a long association with EDII – from the times when entrepreneurship was a nascent concept in the country. It has now got established as a discipline that includes aspiring people to ensure their own growth and development. EDII empowered-entrepreneurs can now dream to enter international markets and compete successfully. They capture opportunities and win roadblocks to achieve their goals. It is great to see how the country has come to be recognized for its high degree of entrepreneurship, technical competence and the risk-taking propensity among the youths of India and abroad. EDII has made ‘Entrepreneurship’ a ‘Movement, which is also now followed by various ‘Developing Economies.”
Dr. Neerja A Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat University said, “Indian academia has started focussing on entrepreneurship as one of the key disciplines. Strategic initiatives and highly focussed courses on the subject are allowing students to develop a distinct entrepreneurial mindset and behaviour. They are stepping forth to benefit from the ecosystem that has been erected to promote start-ups among students. I would also add that just one success has an extremely high spill-over effect. And, this is because of the high orientation of the students towards entrepreneurship. They just require a little thrust to inspire them to float their own business.”
Dr. Rajul K Gajjar, Vice-Chancellor, Gujarat Technological University, said, “Entrepreneurship is on a rise not only among the youth but also among technocrats who are increasingly showing an inclination towards entrepreneurship on account of conducive policies and favourable ecosystem. These youngsters are ready to shoulder the responsibility of becoming a major source of productivity, growth and employment opportunities. The last couple of years have especially witnessed high levels of innovation and setting up of tech-based enterprises. I would also like to add that even our villages and small towns are witnessing an influx of new enterprises. That is certainly a positive change for the country and GenX.”
In his address, Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director-General, EDII traced the genesis of EDII and informed how the Institute had moved from one role to another in strengthening entrepreneurship not just in the country but also outside.
He said, “With every decade, entrepreneurship has undergone a shift. The tasks of conceptualizing, envisioning, launching and running a business has acquired new meanings with changing times. And with every changing era, EDII revisited its parameters to ensure that identifying the right opportunity, preparing a researched business plan, taking calculated risks, planning systematically, harnessing time-relevant resources, amassing technical finesse and networking continued to be focussed upon for the success of an enterprise. We are happy to have removed the apprehensions associated with entrepreneurship and to establish it as a development tool. Today, people believe that entrepreneurs can be made too.”

Dignitaries from the Government, corporates, Industry associations and the academia attended the event which focussed on establishing how entrepreneurship, startups and innovations were impacting the socio-economic growth of the country.
