AHMEDABAD, OCT 31

A brain-dead youth has given the fresh lease of lives to five persons in Gujarat and Maharashta.

CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad, on Friday, announced that it has conducted yet another successful heart transplant surgery, 12th overall, on Thursday. They have received the harvested heart of the youth to make this feat possible.

A 43-year-old male patient from Anand district, who was suffering from dilated Cardiomyopathy, received the heart from a 27-year-old male brain-dead patient from Surat, who had suffered severe brain injuries in an accident. His heart and other organs were donated by his family members after Nilesh Mandlewala of Surat-based ‘Donate Life’ convinced them to do so.

“The heart was successfully implanted in the male patient, who is stable and doing fine. This was the 12th heart transplant at CIMS Hospital in less than two years. We are thankful to Donate Life for its efforts to create awareness about organ donation, and the traffic police and airport officials in Surat and Ahmedabad for creating a green corridor and enabling transport of the donated heart from Surat to Ahmedabad in just 90 minutes,” said Dr. Dhiren Shah, Director – Cardiac Surgeon & Director – Heart – Lung  Transplant, CIMS Hospital.

“Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart’s ability to pump blood reduces as the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, is enlarged and weakened. In some cases, it prevents the heart from relaxing and filling with blood as it should normally, and over time it can also affect the other chambers. It affects thousands of patients in Gujarat & India. Now, the patient is stable & fine”, according to Dr. Dhaval Naik – Cardiac & Heart – Lung Transplant Surgeon, who was a part of the team that conducted the surgery.

Youth gives fresh lease of life to 5 persons

The kidney, liver, and pancreas of the deceased donor were transplanted in patients at IKDRC in Ahmedabad, while the lungs were transplanted in a patient at a hospital in Mumbai, giving the recipients a new lease of life.

Noting that the organ donation rate in India is less than 0.50% as against 30-40% in some advanced countries, Dr. Shah stressed the need to increase awareness regarding organ donation to ensure that lakhs of people who are on the wait-list for organs can get one.

CIMS has been a leading healthcare player in Gujarat and has several laurels to its credit, including the only ‘Heart Transplant’ programme in Gujarat. It has emerged as the most reliable private hospital even for COVID-19 patients during these critical times.  Accredited by  JCI – Joint Commission International (USA), NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers), and NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) CIMS Hospital is reputed to provide international quality healthcare and patient safety.
